About the Editor-in-Chief Position

Job Description

The UCR School of Public Policy is looking for Consilium’s next Editor-in-Chief. Reporting to the School of Public Policy’s Digital Marketing Specialist, Consilium’s Editor in-Chief will be charged with overseeing programming and ensuring written submissions for the yearly journal publication. As the leader of the editorial board, the Editor-in-Chief will be responsible for determining all editorial guidelines; reviewing all content for accuracy and appropriateness; and providing edits and necessary changes to improve submissions. The Editor-in-Chief will also be involved in fundraising efforts. This position is open to only public policy students (majors, minors, and transfers). 

The incumbent will serve on an ongoing basis until graduation, contingent on satisfactory performance. The hired applicant must undergo training. The Editor-in-Chief can expect to work an average of 4 hours per week; please note this is an average weekly amount - hours may shift upwards or downwards from week to week depending on individual projects and program needs. There may be minimal summer work expectations. 

Responsibilities
  • Oversee a team of associate editors/other volunteers and ensure deliverables
  • Work closely with Digital Marketing Specialist to assist with fundraising efforts for Consilium
  • Oversee budget and track expenses for 2022-2023 academic school year
  • Oversee and respond accordingly to emails sent to main Consilium email account (consilium@ucr.edu) 
  • Prepare training materials for team so they can assist in leading information sessions
  • Schedule and lead information sessions during beginning Fall quarter
  • Schedule and lead workshop writing sessions during end of Fall and beginning of Winter quarters
  • Schedule and lead editing appointments during Winter quarter
  • Prepare materials/presentations for various types of workshops
  • Assist in planning end-of-year journal publication launch event
  • Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned 
Qualifications
  • Excellent written communication and editing skills.
  • Strong leadership, conflict management skills, and ability to work independently as well as in a team.
  • Positive attitude, enthusiasm, customer service orientation, and utmost professionalism in attire and demeanor.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and discretion with confidential matters.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills.
  • Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint a plus.
  • Experience with Google Calendar or other calendaring / time management tools a plus.
  • Experience with Basecamp or other project management tools a plus.

Requirements

  • Must have strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Must be a declared undergraduate public policy major or minor, with knowledge of the field of public policy, the UCR School of Public Policy, and its academic programs, events, and activities.
  • Must have a minimum 3.2 cumulative GPA
  • Must be enrolled in classes and available to work during all quarters of the upcoming academic school year (fall, winter, spring).
  • Must allow use of images to be used for marketing purposes. All candidates must sign a photo/video release.
  • Must sign consent and allow FERPA-trained personnel to review academic record for purposes of verifying demonstration of continuing academic excellence.
